The Exceptional Children (EC) teacher is part of a collaborative special education team delivering MCA’s instructional program through a mix of “pull out” services and inclusion, ensuring that great teaching yields great learning. The EC teacher works with students who have a wide range of learning, emotional, mental, and physical disabilities. He/she adapts general education lessons and teaches all manner of subjects in school. He/she also teaches basic skills, such as communication techniques, executive functioning, behavioral supports, and remedial math and literacy to students with more profound needs. The EC teacher works with a combination of students on the Extended Content state standards and students on Future-Ready Core state standards.

 

The successful EC teacher has the ability to engage and motivate towards success; possesses depth of knowledge of the curriculum; demonstrates effective teaching strategies; facilitates student learning; has counseling and facilitation skills; thrives on challenge, autonomy and accountability.  He or she possesses excellent organizational and time management skills; possesses good record keeping skills; is able to work effectively with special student populations; is creative and resourceful; possesses sufficient computer skills; works effectively in the complex operation of a K-12 school. Furthermore, this individual understands and supports the classical tradition as expressed by the philosophy, mission, vision, and goals upon which the Academy is founded and is committed to the pursuit of knowable, objective truth, goodness, and beauty.

 

Qualifications also include relevant college degree(s), the necessary certification requirements, as well as a valid driver’s license and transportation. 

 

Position Description

  • Develop, implement, review, and conduct evaluations for IEPs; 
  • Provide direct special education instruction to identified students, planning, organizing, and assigning activities that are specific to each student’s abilities; 
  • Employ a variety of special education strategies and techniques to meet student needs, creating a flexible program and learning environment that provides specialized instruction for students with disabilities; 
  • Modify the general education curriculum for students with disabilities based upon a variety of instructional techniques and technologies; 
  • Provide adequate classroom discipline to enhance the learning environment.
  • Act as a case coordinator for assigned students, effectively communicating with teachers, parents, related services staff, and administrators to facilitate the IEP process; 
  • Develop lesson plans that ensure the attainment of specific learning standards for resource courses and work with staff to modify and accommodate lessons to the needs of students with disabilities in inclusion-based settings; 
  • Coordinate lesson plans and field trips with other teachers to maximize possibilities for integrated, multi-disciplinary teaching addressing individual needs of assigned students;
  • Evaluate students’ progress through data collection to establish meaningful student goals and necessary accommodations; 
  • Maintain effective professional liaison and communication between school and home, including periodic written progress reports; 
  • Maintain privacy of student records and information;
  • Emphasize the virtues of integrity, respect, responsibility, compassion, commitment, self-discipline, perseverance, and service to others.
  • Be familiar with the Millennium Charter Academy personnel policy handbook and act in accordance with it.
  • Demonstrate flexibility by undertaking diverse responsibilities necessary in a small population school.
  • Accept and incorporate feedback and coaching from administrative staff;
  • Attend staff development and team planning meetings during designated hours.
